In 2000, at the age of 13, Hamilton joined the Mercedes-Benz McLaren development program, which helped to support young drivers with the potential to make it to Formula One. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season, winning multiple races and finishing second in the drivers’ championship, just one point behind Kimi Räikkönen. He also set a number of records, becoming the first rookie driver to finish on the podium in his first race, and the first rookie to lead the drivers’ championship.
